Dear customers & friends,
You are the reason why we stand strong. Thank you for giving us the privilege and opportunity of receiving your trust. Thanks for the professional & constructive feedback and referrals! Your referrals are the highest compliments & are sincerely appreciated. We will continue to work hard to earn your support!
Listen to what our customers have said about our service.
Customer comments under each date are either conversations or a string of comments written by multiple persons. We separate each customer's comments by a blank line, then copy & paste as is. To respect other dealers and shops mentioned, we have removed or replaced their names with xx. We respect good & honest competition, so if we miss doing so, please excuse the oversight.
Although a lot of comments below mention NSX, we service most Japanese cars, not just NSX. Our price is NOT NSX price. Please give us a call if you own a Honda, Acura, Toyota, Nissan or any other Japanese car.
Side note: Our price estimates are set on the computer & are the same regardless of which partner you talk to, so please do not insist on speaking with Don.

Don is simply the best.
The way my husband and I found him was actually by random means. His crappy Nissan Sentra broke down one day and we had it towed by AAA to the nearest AAA approved auto shop. It happened to be Hill Top Auto. Ever since, we have been taking our cars there.
Don is the most honest, experienced, hard-working auto mechanic I have ever dealt with. If something needs to be fixed, he always gives the lowest, most reasonable prices compared to many other auto shops. If something doesn't need to be fixed, he will tell you the truth and not deceive you for that extra pay. So if Don tells you something in your car needs to be fixed, then it needs to be fixed asap.
Thank you Don for taking care of my husband's car all these years!

Thumbs Up to Don for being a honest mechanic. He don't give you any bullshit or try to lie about what needs done on your whip. My Pop showed me this spot, and I must say, one of the best spot to get work done for your car. I know the shop says specialize in Honda/Acura, but I am pretty sure they work on any Japanese cars.

Thanks Don @ Hilltop Auto Service
Once again Don came to my rescue. I was driving to work on Thursday and got on 580 and sort of jumped on it a little (actually quite a bit) and heard a popping sound when I engaged the clutch to shift from 2nd to 3rd. I could not get it in gear and had to coast to an exit. Figured it was the clutch because when I stopped I could shift it into a gear but heard a rattling noise. Shut it down, called AAA and towed it to Hilltop Auto in Daily City. Car got there around 11 and Don had dropped the transmission by 4 and determined it was the clutch. He got a new stock one in next morning and the car was ready to go by Saturday at 11. I figured the car would be out of service for 4-5 days and not 2 days. When I got there the original was in bad shape. It was down to the rivets and one of the springs had busted loose causing the rattle. However, after 150k miles on the original clutch I do not feel too bad.
Thanks Don.
Don is the the man. He just replaced a flaky ignition switch on my NSX that was giving me all kinds of grief.
smhrednsx91, I think I saw you there picking up your car when mine was on its way in on a flat bed.
Don found my bad ignition switch on my last nsx too after I almost busted the battery terminals thinking they were loose.
I just had Don put an OEM unit in mine with a Fidanza lightweight flywheel.
I picked mune up Sat 5/1 afternoon around 4 pm. There were 3 or 4 other NSXs there.

I've been going to Hill Top Auto Service since they've opened. Don is very knowledgeable and honest. If you own a Honda or Acura, I would definitely recommend this place.
4-19-2010
Took my slowly dying car here, got a good honest opinion (it's dying, I shouldn't put too much money into it).
They were helpful and nice to talk to.
They are pretty busy though, so don't expect same-day treatment.

Just acquired a 91 NSX
Looking for recommendations on where to have my newly acquired NSX serviced/modified in Northern CA. I live in Marin and work in San Francisco.
Car is stock 91, with 31,500 miles and plenty of deferred maintenance...
Thanks for any help.
I go to Don at Hilltop Automotive in Daly City. I am extremely happy with his work and care taken with my car, a 1996 NSX. I have no reservations about recommending him. Many others on this forum have the same view.....
It's going to seem like a long way to travel for you, but find a way to take it to Don at Hilltop Auto in Daly City. He and his unassuming shop have all the expertise to properly take care of your NSX at a very fair price.
Also, have Don check the coolant hoses for you. There are 22 of them and if one breaks you will be in a world of hurt. Ask me how I know.
I Too live in Marin and my car has been well serviced by Don Lam at Hilltop. Highly recommended.
I had Don do my timing belt and all the water hoses at 36K because my car has seen plenty of track time... it really didn't need them at all... but it made me feel better.

After taking my car to Grace Honda since 1998, I chose Hill Top because of Yelp reviews. Honda told me I needed over $1000.00 in repairs. Don checked out my car fully, including checking the exhaust manifold which he said had a hairline crack but I didn't need to repair it yet. He said a future repair, if needed, would cost $900.00. He could have insisted I fix it and he would have earned $900.00 but he didn't! Grace Honda would have insisted I needed the repair and charged $1500.00 !!! He also quoted me $500.00 less than a recent repair I had at Gilroy Honda. He changed the oil, replaced windshield wiper blades, did an inspection, and fixed a hood rattle for $80.00! He said I did not yet need my 130k mile service or any of the items Honda recommended. Love this shop!
3-23-2010
I moved to San Mateo but I still go to Don for my oil change and maintence. Don is honest and reliable. He was referred to me by my brother'n law who knows about cars. He would not tell me to fix this and that to try to make money. I asked about the badge of my Acura and he even told me don't worry about just get it before u sell your car!
I highly recommend him.
3-13-2010
I've been coming here for like 10 years with 2 different Hondas. Is that a coincidence? Don't think so.
As others have noted, Don is a very honest mechanic, customer service is excellent, and he really takes the time to explain the pros + cons to putting off a repair (and I can attest that I know nothin' about cars). But I tend to get things fixed if I think it can potentially be a safety issue (that's just the nervous side getting the better of me). I recommend him to everyone I know that has a Japanese car - yup, he's that good + I like to support guys (businesses) like him. At the end of the day, I always feel like I'm on solid ground after Don checks my car.
Bonus: while waiting for my car to be serviced, there are some things to waste your time away on. Like, I love the $1 store as you turn left on Mission St, or else turn right for a block and you hit the Daly City Library on the 3rd floor (views!). If you keep going a block further, you will hit the mall. Just keep your cell phone on + they will call you when it's time to return.
5 stars! for proving that honesty + competence can + do go together. Great staff too!

NSX service maintenance in SF/San Jose area
Searched a bit and couldn't find recommendations for shops to service/maintain an NSX in the San Francisco-San Jose area. Can anyone point me to this info or recommend a shop.
http://www.hilltopautoservice.com
A lot of prime members take their nsx to him.
+ 1
Don knows his stuff.
Hilltop is excellent.
I recently had my clutch replaced and an aftermarket flywheel installed. Also, the car was aligned. All work done at Hilltop.
Is the work of excellent quality at a reasonable price? Yes, certainly.
1-23-2010
I worked in the auto insurance industry for seven years and was always looking for an honest and reliable mechanic who knew what he was doing. My coworker at the time recommended Don Lam and I've never had to go anywhere else for mechanical work. Don's prices are very reasonable and he's probably one of the most honest mechanics around.
11-9-2009
alignment
hello,
any place near fremont that you guys went to have your alignment check and / or tires mounted also for a good deal and know the nsx?
He's not really near Fremont, but I bring all my tire/alignment work to Don at Hilltop Auto in Daly City.
10-31-2009
I've been to Don many times to work on my '96 Accord. Yes, it's old and has over 215k miles but running just fine. Over the past couple years I've taken it to Hill Top for a new wheel bearing, O2 sensor, water pump and oil change. Don has found faulty work from previous mechanics that gave me a bad water pump and did a poor job on the brake rotors. Luckily he advised me to go back to the brake rotor guy because it should still be under warranty. Everyone at the shop is friendly. Don is an honest mechanic and is reasonable. I'm thinking about getting a new car and almost want to get another Honda or Acura just because that's what he specializes in.

change hoses???
Hi Prime, anyone have their coolant hoses replaced in the Bay area? Where and how much did the job cost? need to replace all 22 hoses, car has 64k miles and is a 92. Thanks in advance.
Good for you for doing this maintenance before you have a failure. Probably any Acura dealer could do it for you, but I, like many here, take my car to Don at Hilltop Auto in Daly City.
8-27-2009
Great work at Hilltop Auto
I just got a new OEM clutch installed by Don at Hilltop. He changed all the fluids, inspected the master and slave, and found a broken motor mount. The clutch works great.
All the work was in a neat and timely fashion, delivering the car only one day late after having my new motor mount (one of the last in the US!) sent overnight.
Thanks Don!
+1 for Don from RW

My car needed a *lot* of work done, I knew that going in. It's kinda one of those times that you're embarrassed to tell the shop that you've missed your last two high milage service dates and you know something(s!) is very wrong. So, I was looking for someone who was trustworthy and would get this 190,000 mile Accord back in solid condition.
Don's reputation drew me to him and he delivered. I dropped the car off on a Thursday morning before leaving town for several days with a plaintive "please fix whatever needs to be fixed". His son called me Friday afternoon with a quote that was reasonable
I picked my car up a couple days later and it's been driving great since!
I'll be coming back for sure.
8-15-2009
We already know a honest mechanic is hard to find. Therefore, this place deserves nothing less than 5 stars!
Don is well acquainted with my Honda-loving family. All our cars go here for the usual - oil changes, brakes, service. We completely forget about the overpriced dealerships and see Don and his staff instead. He's personable and provides excellent service. He tells you what you need to have done and what could wait. Dealerships just try to get the most out of you every time you take your car in for a simple oil change.
It's a good feeling to know that you aren't being ripped off when you leave this place.

Need help for a PPI in SF area
Anyone has any information on RyanITV old NSX, It belongs to SYCOSHO, he has it up for sale. My friend is going to look at it in mid August to buy it.
Any recommendation for a place that can do PPI.
Most people will probably suggest Hill Top in Daily City for a PPI.
Don at Hilltop Auto is a preferred NSX tech in the Bay Area.
7-18-2009
Don is a great mechanic and really knows his stuff. He's honest, down-to-earth, and provided excellent customer service. I will not take my car to anywhere else!

High Praise for Don at Hilltop Auto Service
How did Hilltop Auto Service get as popular as he is for nsx owners' services? I mean the place looks pretty hidden away. How was the gem discovered and how did it spread?
Just curious as I'll be living up the hill from the shop.
Hill Top has done the bulk of work on my NSX for a decade. Some I do myself -- I'm capable, I built and raced cars in SCCA and IMSA for 30 years... even owned my own shop for a few years back in the early '70s.
When Don does it, I don't have to wonder if I missed something.
You may find a shop somewhere that does as good a job, but you won't find one that does a better job.
Don used to work for Acura of Serramonte. He opened his own in the 1990's. He takes care of all my NSXs and my wife's Ferrari. J/K. My wife drives a CRV.
Much has been written about this man, and I've been in his shop before, but never for engine work. I had some, on hindsight, lame idea that since my car was under a warranty that I would be best served taking it to the dealer where I purchased the car. Now that the warranty had expired, I decided to give Don a crack at the engine.
And O. M. F. G.! I cannot believe this is even the same car! It's running better now that I can recall it ever did. It's so smooth and quick. I had no idea how bad it had gotten, because even running poorly the NSX is still a monster machine. But man, it is slick now!
While doing the tune-up, there were some things that bugged Don, and he kept the car for an extra few days. That is some kind of dedication, and I really appreciate it. Don's friendliness and professionalism are legendary as well.
I might have to consider him on my next maintenance.
Just curious..does he owns a NSX himself?
Don gets paid test driving all kinds of NSX all day long and more than he cares for. It is better than owning one himself.
Ditto on all the good praises for Don. I've had many pleasant experiences with Don @ Hilltop. I will continue to bring my NSX for all its needs .
Dons the man
my old NSX was almost considered his.
And now my 93 NSX is considered his. In fact my three Legends (now sold), TL Type S, Honda Accord, and Infiniti G20 practically belong to him... I just pay the insurance on them... And every now and then Don will let me take one of my cars out for the weekend...
I echo all good words said about Don...
Remember folks, there is no one that is perfect and does everything right 100% of the time, but Don is close. And by the remote chance something does go wrong, Don will make it right. The best thing I appreciate about Don is his HONESTY...

New Clutch Needed - where to go?
I'm close to purchasing a 1994 NSX that has the clutch pedal engaging high up the pedal. Don't know how high up the pedal yet, but assuming its "high". Seller reports no slippage, but an indicator it may not last too much longer. I live in Brentwood - far East Bay - so where can I take my prospective NSX for an OEM clutch job?
Did a PPI on another car at Don at Hilltop but hoping there is someone qualified closer to home or even at a dealer (although they have never been my favorite place).
What about price, anyone had one done lately? Any other thoughts/suggestions?? Appreciate the help.
So far Clutch Works and Don.... they are like 70 miles away. Appreciate other options??
I like Don at Hilltop Auto for all my work of this nature.
Thanks everyone for the feedback. Had thought there would be several options, but after checking around on price, $2,900ish appears to be the going rate. Already had PPI and very positive experiences with Don, so he is the man!! Just would have liked something closer to home but will travel for quality........
6-15-2009
Don deserves the five stars and many more.
I had to get the cool air intake taken out of my TSX because apparently it wasn't CARB certified (only in California, folks T_T). Everything passed, but the smog guys were like HEY! You don't have a sticker. This is serious. YOU FAIL!
I was sad. Since I was away at school my poor TSX sat in my garage doing nothing for the past quarter. I called numerous places asking them how much it would cost for them to take it out the intake and put the stock one back and most places couldn't even give me a definite answer. I called another place I had found on yelp and asked three times for a ballpark park and the guy says, "Oh..yeah..you know it could be from like $50 to $200." That's a pretty big ballpark there, son.
I was just about to give in and jet all the way down to San Jose to a shop recommended by my boyfriend but really didn't feel like driving an hour just to get something taken out and put back in. So, I decided to give Don a call.
He was very straightforward and extremely courteous and polite. And since I live only three blocks away from their shop he let me bring my car in as soon as I hung up the phone. Though it took a little bit longer than estimated (which I had no issues with), Don still charged me the same amount he had told me earlier which I was SO thankful for (poor college student writing here).
Long story short? Hill Top Auto Service is reliable, incredibly reasonably priced and the people are so nice. I would definitely recommend this place.

Engine just stalls after a few.. which dealer should I go to Sunnyvale or Los Gatos?
Hey All
I Need some advice.. My NSX has got a sensor problem, and the Engine dies or becomes feably weak (runs below idle around 500 rpm before it dies) in real random times. I can go 100 miles(yesterday Sonoma county to Sunnyvale) or 200 yards( today) before it will stall again.
There is only one tech in the Bay Area to take it to, Don Lam at Hilltop Auto.
For my last coolant hose replacement job, I went to Don Lam since xx has become fairly expensive. They restructured their rates recently and I simply didn't want to pay nearly twice as much for the same work.
Don Lam did an excellent job and I plan to take my NSX back when I need more substantial work. It's quite a drive but worth it to me.
That's pretty high praise for Don's work for Vytas to drive all the way to Daly City from Monterey.
Give Don a call.
Aside from the dealers, I highly recommend Don's Hilltop Auto Service in Daly City.
I've always had a great experience with Don @ Hilltop and highly recommend him.
I heard that xx is no longer working on cars as a profession. xx has left xx,
No more xx, no more xx. I guess there's still of course Don up in SF area.

That's a big thumbs up from me too.
If you live in the City, all roads lead to Don at Hilltop.

Hilltop gave me a great experience. I called in the morning to see if they had time to take a look at my car. It was making some weird noises and wanted to do away with it. They took me in right away. They kept my car for about 3 or so hours for the diagnostic and found the major issues. They were more concerned about me driving around in an unsafe car than getting more money out of me. Great customer service.

really friendly and understanding.
probably the cheapest you can get.
recommended.

Don is some sort of auto guru! I brought in my car because of a really loud rattle you could hear me a block away. But before he diagnosed the rattle, he popped my hood, looked in, and said "your radiator's leaking". He smelled the leaking coolant as the car drove by him. And it really wasn't leaking that much! He also efficiently diagnosed the rattle and repaired it by simply removing a loose part. He was honest, prompt and efficient.

In a world where people try to bleed every last cent out of you, Don is one of the last remaining honest dudes out there!
I brought him my very rough running Suzuki Samurai. It's been sitting in the driveway for the last few months, and needed a tune up and more, badly.
A few months ago, I was quoted about 500 bucks for a tune at the local gas station and I said "Hah! forget it!" I used to tune it myself a few years ago, and I know that the parts only cost around $75 for everything.
Well, time got away from me, and I never performed that tune up. I tried to start it the other day and it ran like an unevenly loaded washing machine.
We've had Don work on another car (a real car) and he did such a great job and was so honest about the things he could have easily snuck in and charged us for (you know...mechanics and autoshops are not the most honest folks you're going to meet) But instead, Don told us he didn't do this or that, because the parts still looked good. How about that? MOST places would have performed every darned test, and replaced half the components and then charged you for them, whether you needed them or not.
I ended up having a leak between the intake manifold and the block, which is why it was running like I had thrown it off a cliff. He replaced the gasket AND a tune up, and the bill came out to 450 bucks or so. STILL well under what the corner gas station wanted to charge me!
The shop is clean, orderly and never yucky. Most garages you go to make you itch, the music is too loud, and it looks like they employ tattooed derelicts, but not Don's. They always greet you courteously, and more importantly, they do what they say they're gonna do, they have the car when they say they're going to have it, and from now on, I'm not taking my little zuki anywhere else!
If it's Japanese, he knows how to work on it. You are NEVER going to find a better shop than this one.

any info on jh4na1153mt001827
I reside in Berkeley, CA, This one is on craigslist and is located in Aptos, CA. 1991 Black/Black, manual trans, rear bumper scratched, tb and water pump done, 60000 miles, asking 25K. I want to get PPI and compression checked, anyone know knowledgable dealer or mechanic who can help me with those tasks? Also want to make sure the frame is straight, and not in snapring range. seller claims clear title. Thanks in advance.
A lot of NSX people in the Bay Area use Hilltop in Daily City.

It's really very hard to find a good mechanic, but for Japanese cars you can't beat Don. He's also very reasonably priced. As others have mentioned, he is honest, won't go back on an estimate even if it takes him a long time to complete the job (mid-engined cars are a pain in the ass to work on) and genuinely deserves the best rating I can give. His work is very high quality, and despite the small size of the operation it's run well. Don't expect a ride though, this isn't a BMW dealership - just walk to the BART station if they can't and take a taxi.
12-7-2008
Don is a very HONEST mechanic. There were a couple occasions where another mechanic said I needed some work done and Don was honest to tell me that some of the work was not needed yet. His prices are reasonable and what separates him from other mechanics is his expertise and honesty. His wife also works there and takes care of the paperwork. I no longer own a Honda/Acura, but still take my car here for repairs because I know that I can trust Don.
Honesty - 5/5
Quality of Work - 5/5
Price - 4/5

first repair-- cv joint - heads up
just got a spa yellow 97, has 85k miles ,on test ride cv joints were quiet, took out last week and pass. side started to make typical joint noise , next day ser man came from Helms, once i saw how honda built their axles i knew what problem was ,i searched all the threads on cv joints , heres a heads up, our joint s are not like a normal front wheel drive, we use plunge joints on both sides of the axle (there is no rzeepa joint ) the outboard joint is spring loaded to force the in board axle stub against a plastic button in the inner joint(it is not shown in parts break down ) as grease gets old or if car sits ,inner joint will hang up on transfer and produce cv noise , removed axle as per man, nboard joint need to be cleaned and lube , outboard joint was not bad, serviced both , everything o.k. ,
My 03 right cv joint needed to be replaced at 6,500 miles.
Don @ Hilltop auto found it while installing my camber kit.

S 2000 Steering Wheel
Will a S2000 steering wheel fit on the NSX ?
Anybody fitted any oem Honda wheel from another model, or is the only option aftermarket.
I was over at Hilltop Auto Service and Don there had a S2000 steering wheel which was for a NSX (not mine BTW). It appears that the S2000 has less splines on the steering wheel hub shaft than the one for a NSX. So your answer would be a big NO for the S2000 to a NSX.

Silly Question!
Hi there, does any one here have a NSX tattoo? Or have an awesome idea of one? I am thinking of getting one and I like the design that the Las Vegas guys have got on there shirts. ( the out line of the car )
There was a guy who had the "NSX" logo on the back of his neck. I can't remember who it was though, but I saw it at a Basch event at Don Lam's Hilltop Auto (SF Bay Area) in the 2000-2001 timeframe.

Sunnyvale/Mtn View area shop request
Ok so I am trying to get an oil change. I looked in the forums and there are bad reviews for Stevens Creek. Los Gatos had good reviews but the lady told me 150 bucks for an oil change. That's ridiculous! Considering Mobil 1 is about $5 a quart and the filter is $11 and maybe a 30 min job. Anyone know any other shops????
Thanks,
Waqaas
xx is in Sunnyvale/Santa Clara, but their prices are really high.
I go to Don @ Hilltop for all of my work, I've been there about 4 times already for oil changes and minor repairs. He is good and prompt, and his prices are reasonable.
Can you make it to Daly City? Don Lam at Hilltop Auto Service will take good care of you.
Yea I usually take it to don.

BAY AREA- Where or how TO INSTALL THE CHASSIS/SWAY BARS??
Hey I was wondering where the rest of you guys got your Type R chassis bars and sway bars installed? Should it be done at a place where they are real fimiliar with the NSX or any shop mechanic can do it ?? Also is there a install guide for the chassis bars and sway bars??
Any recomendations would be greatly appericiated. Thanks
I had mine installed at Hilltop couple of weeks ago. Just tell Don I refer you.
Oh ofcourse Don. Thanks.

new owner questions
So after a couple days of ownership I have some questions for you all
1. Is there a way that I can "brighten" the stock head lights? They seem very dark compared to my other cars
2. Is there a way to brighten the interior illumination? I have turned the dial all the way to the left but its still not very bright. Are all NSX's this way? Is that knob supposed to push in and click? Mine stays out.
3. Idle is low. It seems like the car idles at 400-500 rpm. Is this correct? It seems quite low to me.
4. Engine glass hatch struts are going. Where is the cheapest place to get them?
5. Condensation in a tail lights. Seal? How do I fix this
6. I need new floor mats. Cheapest place to get them?
7. The stock stereo SUCKS. Can I just change the speakers or is it more envolved? What size are they?
8. My auto switch on the climate control doesnt function. I have to put the fan on high and then it works but the auto doesnt. Is this a common problem and what is the recommended fix?
9. Windows are slooooooow to roll up. I thought the window issue was only through 92. How can I fix this? WD-40??
3. Your idle is too low. Take it to Don at Hilltop.
Sounds like a trip to Don at hilltop is in order to fix them all ...

Cost of Ownership
I'm seriously in search of an NSX and wanted to ask the folks in this forum what it costs (approx.) for the following maintenance of a 1991 car:
1. snap ring preventative maintenance
2. timing belt, water pump and belt tensioner
3. wind up window motor problem (per window)
4. Air conditioning not blowing cold
5. replace drivers seat (serious bolster issue)
6. missing front spare (available??)
7. crappy sounding stereo ($endless)
Many Bay Area Prime members use Don's Hilltop in Daly City

Good service shop?
I need to do a 60K maintenance on the NSX and was wondering if anyone has a good recommendation on where to go? I'd prefer some where close to the South Bay (San Jose/Milpitas) but East Bay is okay too.
NEVERMIND!
I'm definitely going to Don at HILLTOP!
2-10-2008
I really like Don and feel he is really honest, he has A+ service and he also helped my husband narrow down minivan choices based on his years as a mechanic. That was a nice touch. He is friendly with many smiles.

I work as an insurance damage appraiser and have had the unfortunate experience of working with despicable body shops / mechanics regularly all over the Bay Area. I can honestly say Don at Hilltop Auto is one of the most helpful, honest, and knowledgeable Japanese import mechanics I have encountered. If you own a Honda, Acura, or Toyota I encourage you to call for a price quote and pin it against your current mechanic / dealer $ the next time you're in need of servicing. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
He gave me helpful advise about my Acura Integra, replaced a signal bulb and fixed my mirror for nada. His labor rate is really fair for Bay Area mechanical work plus he knows his Japanese imports. 1 yr or 12K mileage warranty is standard. I'll be back for sure. Alfonse from Yelp

In my 15 years of living in the DC/SF area I've gone through many mechanics, and Don at Hill Top Auto has been the best. He is honest, kind, and effecient. He's been my mechanic for my previous 2 Hondas and now my Miata and RAV4.
Great prices too!!! The Toyota Dealer ship quoted me $340 for my front brakes on the RAV 4, Don did them for $149.

Don at Hilltop good w/ transmission work?
Hey folks, I was about to install a new clutch at Don's, but realized it may not be a clutch problem, but rather a release bearing or engine mount re-centering problem. Anybody here has gone to him to see a similar issue?
I've not had any transmission/clutch work done at Don's but if any problem in that area arose he would be my first and only choice. I've had a variety of work done by Don and based on his service and price would recommend him highly.
I'm VERY picky.... I like Don's work very much. I'm sure he can handle your problem.
If your NSX is with Don, then you are in good hands. I asked him to change oil on my Murcielago, and he said he will try to work on it on my next visit. Saves me thousands!
Every time I've gone there I've seen Don working on the cars. He has other people who work there but IMO if Don says the work is done it's done. I've never had any issues with Don and his prices are very reasonable. Any work done by others is supervised closely by Don...
Don is a down to earth person, and he loves sports cars! Him and I can literally talk about cars the whole day, ha ha but I feel guilty for holding up his time, since he gets pretty busy sometimes.
If you want him to work on your car, all you need to do is ask if he would do it, if he said he will, then his words are as good as gold. (If he say he can't, not because he won't, but because he is probably busy working on a particular project that day, therefore ask to schedule an appointment for a later date) And I know for a fact that if you want him to do the oil change, he will do it! Doesn't matter if you drive a Honda Civic, or Acura NSX. I talked to him a few times, he is a cool guy.
BTW, I confirmed with him last night that he best recommends that I take my Bat to the Dealer, since he said he doesn't want to screwup, very very honest guy! But I will always take my suv there for all the maintenaces.
I had Acura of xx install my clutch, flywheel, 4.55 R&P and short gears. It took forever. I found out later that they were waiting for Don to come over to their shop when he had extra time and do the job because they couldn't handle it. The work was flawless.
Don did my short gears and 4.23 R&P. Has worked great ever since.
can someone provide the contact and location information for Don's?
Thanks- Don sounds like a stand up kind of guy.

xx at xx Acura?
Does anyone know anything about a possible Master tech named xx at xx Acura?
I was in there buying some parts today and the service lady told me they had a Mastertech named xx working there. I asked for his card but she didnt have one so she walked me over to the service guys room and some manager guy confirmed they do work on NSXs and said something about having 4 in the shop last week. I asked if xx was a Master tech and he didnt says yes or no.....just said we have many NSX techs. I didn't ask anymore and just took this to mean xx is a tech and not a Master tech. So does anyone have any experience with xx Acura?
I take mine to Don at Hilltop in Daly city even though I'm only a mile from xx acura. I spoke to xx once and he seemed to know a lot about the nsx, more by the book, but I don't think he can compare to Don to the details and troubleshooting level.

good PPI place in Bay Area
Hi all, Is there a good PPI place in bay area? I'm buying an NSX near Oakland. Thank you
No question: drive over to Daly City and go to Don at Hilltop. One of the best around.

Mechanic recommendation north of San Francisco?
Of course, I could bring my car to xx in the South Bay for major work like timing belt replacement, but are there mechanics in Marin County well versed in servicing NSX? I live just 10 minutes from xx Acura, and I'd imagine they have much experience in servicing NSXes, but I'm keen on bringing the car to an independent, honest mechanic.
Any recommendations? Thanks.
Drive to Daly City and see Don at Hilltop.
Thanks. I wish my experience with xx Acura's sister dealer, xx Honda was better. However, I will be taking my NSX to Don next week. Being close to a BART station is also a big plus.
I agree with you .... my experience with both these dealers is that they are OK, but just OK... and their prices are out of line with reality.
I live very near you and I take my car to Hill Top.
We should work out service schedules and follow each other.
Took my NSX to Don this morning. He first looked through the car more extensively than the PPI guy. With some deferred maintenance issues, he will have the car for a couple of days, but the first impression of him was extremely positive. When I asked about replacing the front tires, his response was: "I could get the tires and install them for you, but it's better for you if you just get them from tirerack." Whattaguy.
He appeared very amused that the car is bone stock. He even teased me about how long I will keep it that way. He then said that "Stock is best. The engineers knew what they were doing. See that NSX (pointing to another one in the shop)? That one has many problems."
For me, I can drive down to Daly City in the morning, then hop on BART to work in Orinda. Almost more convenient than dropping the car off at Marin Acura, then take the shuttle, then a bus or a ferry to the city, then BART.

Thanks to Yelp I recently took my car to Hilltop for it's 75,000 mile service. Called around to a number of other auto service places that people recommended - besides being the closest to my house, Don quoted me the lowest price. He was friendly and pleasant and had my car ready in a timely manner.
Upon learning that I'm from Santa Cruz, Don pointed out another customer's NSX in the service area. Apparently, that guy drives his car up from Santa Cruz to have Don take care of all of his NSX needs. So I figure he must be pretty good at what he does...

NSX Shop
I'm getting close to getting my timing belt replaced. Where is the best place to go to in central California(Stockton, Modesto, Merced, Fresno) area? Anyone who can refer me the right direction would be greatly appreciated. A phone number to the place would be nice too.
There aren't an abundance of options for some reason in that central CA area;
I think your best bets are going to be driving to Don Lam at Hilltop

Don at Hilltop good w/ transmission work?
Hey folks, I was about to install a new clutch at Don's, but realized it may not be a clutch problem, but rather a release bearing or engine mount re-centering problem. Anybody here has gone to him to see a similar issue?

If your NSX is with Don, then you are in good hands. I asked him to change oil on my Murcielago, and he said he will try to work on it on my next visit. Saves me thousands!
Does Don even work on the car himself?
In all fairness to Don, I've seen this comment or question posted probably by the same person many times while so many people have praised his work. Keep in mind, Bay Area is the most expensive place to live & run a business. Overhead cost is unbelievably high yet his price is very reasonable. Don works very closely with his assistants every step of the way. He is very dedicated & absolutely passionate about his work. He is a very nice guy. I've seen him decline services to some folks who become unreasonable or kept on trying to take advantage of him.
Every time I've gone there I've seen Don working on the cars. He has other people who work there but IMO if Don says the work is done it's done. I've never had any issues with Don and his prices are very reasonable.
Any work done by others is supervised closely by Don... hardly worth his time to do oil changes -- but I bet he checks torque on the drain plug and tightness of the fliter when it's done.
Don is a down to earth person, and he loves sports cars! Him and I can literally talk about cars the whole day, ha ha but I feel guilty for holding up his time, since he gets pretty busy sometimes.... if he said he will, then his words are as good as gold. (If he say he can't, not because he won't, but because he is probably busy working on a particular project that day, therefore ask to schedule an appointment for a later date, where he can work on your car specifically!)
BTW, I confirmed with him last night that he best recommends that I take my Bat to the Dealer (2007 Lamborghini Murcielago LP 640 Roadster ~ LP = longitudinale posteriore / Murcielago = Bat in Spanish), since he said he doesn't want to screwup, very very honest guy! But I will always take my suv there for all the maintenaces.

nsx internet shopping and local mechanic shops that deserve recognition
Im getting tired of googling "nsx" to find parts or custom order items and just wanted to start a hub with all known web sites that nsx owners have ordered from and that have had good service through. Also good mechanics that have serviced your nsx with special care.
I tried to find downforce web site but it doesn't come up under google. Thats my frustration. I know its there but I can't find these sites.
For those living near San Francisco, Don at Hilltop Auto Service provides (IMO) the best and most reasonable priced service anywhere in the bay area. I drive 40 miles to his shop (and woul easily drive another 40 more if required). He’s literally saved me thousands over what a local dealer would have charged on just one problem. On my 91 he has done new headers exhaust, coilovers, timing belt/water pump, replaced all hoses, cv boots and regular maintenance. http://www.hilltopautoservice.com/

My one and only auto experience here was one of the best... (From Yelp)
Introducing the Patient...'92 Acura Legend: It had broken down in Berkeley, and I was referred to Hilltop by friendly folks on the Acura Legend auto enthusiast forums. My car was in desperate need of a good doctor.
Enter the Master...Don: The tech who runs this dojo is named Don. He quickly diagnosed my problem as a failed fuel sensor. His prices are really reasonable. The thing that separates him from all others is that he is one of only a handful of Acura NSX certified technicians in the world. He has the certificate on his wall to prove it. He has NSX gatherings at his shop every once in a while, if you're lucky to go on that particular day.
Honest Service with a Smile: I'd definitely be taking my car here if I were still living in the Bay Area.

Don Hilltop - direction via public transportation help
Currently, i'm in Mountain View. I would like to get to Don's place via public transportation like CalTrain and/or BART.
Does anyone in here know how to use the public transportation? I have never used CalTrain or BART before so any information will be helpful.
The last time I went to Hilltop Auto Service I walked from Daily City BART station to his shop and it took about 10-15mins. It's not at far.
If you are coming from Mountain View, I believe you should take Caltrain to Millbrae and from there you can take BART to the Daly City stop.
BTW, if you go tomorrow it's a spare the air day until 1pm so it's free.

I've been taking my 94 Honda Accord to get serviced at Hill Top for over 2 years now and it's still running strong with over 210k miles on it. Don, the owner, is a down to earth and amusing guy. He's honest with what you car needs and charges a fair price for his excellent service. They tend to specialize in Hondas and Acuras but will work on most makes. I've also seen his shop service and repair quite a few NSXs. Apparently he has a very good reputation among the NSX owners.
I do have one good story on how familiar he is with Hondas. I purchased my Accord used with about 105k on it and by the time it hit 145k a massive oil leak occurred while I was driving. Fortunately I have a habit of keeping 1-2 bottles of motor oil in the trunk for emergencies and made it to Hilltop so Don could examine the problem. He asked me if the timing belt has been changed and I knew it had been since the owner had meticulous records of everything and for awhile, I even went to the same shop as the former owner. Don knew what the problem was immediately. He said it was because the shop before most likely followed the OEM guidelines on how to replace the timing belt but said that anyone who fixes enough manual transmission Accords from my year knows that on occasion, a particular seal breaks down causing the oil leak. The problem is easily solved with a $25 part, but again only an experienced Honda mechanic would know to add this part.

This place is great. Don was a mechanic with Honda before he had his own shop. Take your car in for maintenance and compare it to Honda and see a huge difference. Don is very nice and professional.
I have taken it in and been diagnosed with work covered by the warranty and he asks or reminds me that it can be done for free by Honda instead of just charging me. We have two Honda's and take them both there.
He does other makes as well.

Thank you!
Hi Don,
I just wanted to take a moment to THANK YOU, once again, for saving the day with my Integra. What a difference a rubber washer can make! :)
I was going through my maintenance records, and realized that Hill Top Auto Service has been caring for my Integra for nearly five years - and my car and I have been very happy customers with each and every visit.
I first came to Hill Top looking for an alternative to the Dealers (who tend to be profit-driven, rather than service-oriented) - and I know I found one of the best auto repair businesses in the Bay Area. Hill Top provides the best of both worlds:
- Acura/Honda Expertise
- "Friendly, Honest and Dependable" service
You and your team truly live up to this. Hill Top has always gotten the job done right the first time - and you've always looked out for my best interest.
Thank you for your phenomenal work and customer care!

A shop to install front swaybar and chassis bars near SF (xx can't)
Anyone have any recommendations?? I'm in SF but can probably drive an hour.
not that he can't, I just don't think he wants to...haha The NSX is a bit more anoying to work on
If you are in SF, Don should be pretty close to you. I had my TB/WP/60k done there a few months back and saw at least three other NSXs waiting for service there. I am very happy with his work and pricing. Search for other references on prime as well. http://www.hilltopautoservice.com/

need help, bay area
about to purchase an nsx. just wanted to see if anybody knew any local shops that specialize in modded nsx's? also, any good resources for aftermarket parts who are local. thanks.
I only take my car to Don at Hilltop Auto in Daly City. There is a reason why when you go there, that place is loaded with NSX's. Not really a great location but your dealing with NSX's Certified mechanics. I had my car towed from my house in Tracy over there just to get it serviced. They are that good.

Bilstein shocks
I'm about to purchase a set of bilstein shocks from dali and have them installed by hilltop in daly city, don said it may take a full day to swap out. Any other places?
OEM shocks are a pain in the @ss to mess with. I've read people taking from 4 hours to 8+ hours to just remove the stock setup.
Don is quite well versed in the NSX suspension I'm sure he knows exactly what to do and how to do it. Ask: Perhaps it'll take a full day because of a high work-load that day? Or is he actually going to bill you eight hours labor?
Yeah, you might find a shop that will quote you less time - but only if they've never done it before.
Take it to the guy who does it all the time. Take it to Don. He's not going to take any longer than anybody else.
The Fronts are not so tough..the Rears?...They are much harder...there is also is a risk of damaging the outer CV boot with the lower end of the absorber if you are not careful...I have seen a few cars that needed new CV boots after rear absorbers were changed by shops that were not familiar with NSXs.
Also the upper control arm must be taken loose from the subframe and the suspension must be loaded up inorder to get the bolts back in straight, the subframe is Alm and can easily be cross threaded, I have seen that too.
Make sure someone that is well versed in NSX suspension work does the install.
Don is very good with the NSX, and I have had most if not all my work done there. I never have a problem with his work.

New NSX Owner
I'm excited to say I'm now an NSXer! Picked up my car yesterday from San Ramon, and joined the prime just today. It was really special for me as I'm now actually own one of my all time dream car, dated back to my college days
I got one recommendation from the TOV forum, that's Hilltop Auto in Daly City. I would like to see if there's another shop closer to home (Fremont) or my work which is in Sunnyvale.
Hill top auto is the best from what I have heard for serious maint.
Just a quick update on my new NSX. I took the car to Hilltop last week and had the timing belt, water pump, and all the main hoses changed. Don seems to be a very experienced NSX technician and a honest person. I think I will be back for future maintenance.

It's about time for me to do the 60K maintenance on my 93. Anyone have recommendations on where I can get it done at a respectable shop or dealership in the local san jose south bay area?
I had my 60K + TB/WP done at Don's at hilltop

New Clutch Master Cylinder Replacement
I just got back from the dealership (xx, California) and it appears my Clutch Master Cylinder is leaking fluid and causing my rubber clutch pedal cover to slip off every three days or so. They quoted me for $xx+tax to replace it. I wasn't too pleased with the news.
How else are people in California supposed to pay for their $1,800,000 tract house? I'm being serious: a basic home in South Central is going for $450K and a very basic house in a reasonably priced area near/around Los Angeles is now $1,000,000.
Anyways: something has to give. And I suppose it might as well be your wallet.
Are you too far away from a good independent shop, e.g. Don at Hilltop Auto in Daly City?
I decided after all to get my clutch master cylinder replaced by my local mechanic whom I've known for 10+ years. Quoted at $xx out the door parts and labor, it seemed worth it not to have it done by the dealership for over $xx. He seemed to be mechanically competent, and he sounded confident that his shop was up to the job.
I dropped the car off and had him also install my new SOS steering rack bushings with the clutch master cylinder. After I got my car back I immediately noticed the alignment was completely off, which he refused to acknowledge responsibility for and I had to get the wheels aligned again at the tire shop.
That evening I drove home from the shop already irritated about the misalignment, and then I noticed a slight mechanical wurring sound from the engine compartment that I never noticed before. It sounded like the clutch or gears as it's sound was consistent with the engine revs. I put the car in neutral as I was still rolling and revved to engine to see if it was still making the sound. At low RPM's it did not, but at around 3-4k it sounded like something was catching and it made the same mechanical wurring sound. Now I was really mad . I thought after all the headache over the aligmnent and now it appears the clutch master cylinder was improperly installed. Perhaps the clutch was not fullly disengaging I thought, as the friction point is consideralby lower than it was previously (it still caught a little way from the fully depressed point).
I called my mechanic the next day and asked him to look at it, at which point he seemed slightly irritated as this was the second time I came back to his shop complaining about his work. He sat in the car and felt the engagement points, revved the engine in neutral and found nothing to be wrong with the car. Regardless, he found nothing wrong so off I went.
The car seemed to behave normally the next couple of days until I got the revs up onto the freeway when the car made an unpleasant smell. I'd hate to be burning up the clutch or let the problem whatever it is continue without knowing what it is.
I am probably going to take it to the dealership unless anyone can recommend a competent NSX mechanic in the SF Bay area.
The problem was that the clutch system was not bled properly when you got it back. I bet your clutch is how grabbing a little higher then when you first got it back. There should be no reason to adjust the clutch free play when you replace a master. They are all preset from the factory, at least the 13-14 I have done, but what do I know.
The clutch system, interestingly enough can become a self-bleeding system. If you work the clutch enough the air bubbles will flow back to the master cylinder reservoir and once fully bled will magically start working properly.
How did you know? I suppose 13-14 replacements is enough experience, and you're absolutely right. The friction point IS significantly higher now than when I first got it back, catching about 4" from the floor when it was about about 2".
I think I can stop worrying about this for now finally. Any recommended NSX specialists in the bay area?
I am not sure if Don at Hilltop Auto is close to you. He comes highly recommended.
wish had read this thread earlier, or that you had done a search of Bay Area NSX Techs, beacuse you would have found Don at Hilltop Auto. He is the first and last place to go for your NSX service.
Don all Hilltop Auto is in Daly city, which I can get to in less than 20 min. I will go there to get my car serviced from now on.
Good choice. See you at Don's.

92 CD Player Doesn't Work
92 OEM CD Player (Alpine 6-disc changer mounted in trunk) won't play for more than a few seconds at a time. Radio if fine. Want to control the replacement through the original radio--don't want aftermarket with a new controller. Want the "fix" to last. What are my options?
I had Don at Hilltop Auto Service do it. He did a great job, as usual. Tell him I sent you .

Watch out for cheap-o cables
My CD changer broke, and so I replaced it with the ever popular Alpine CHA-S634. However, instead of getting a "real" KCA-130B cable I bought a clone cable off of eBay for cheap. It was only $10, which would have been fine, except that it didn't work. My installer (Don at Hilltop) was able to track down a real Alpine part. It cost more than triple my cheap-o one, but it worked perfectly.
I also had the Smartenna installed at the same time, and that works great, too.
Not a great deal of money, but just a little headache I can perhaps save somebody from...

Moving to bay area soon... meets / service shops?
I'm moving to the bay area soon... was wondering if you guys got any weekly meets going on, and where everyone gets their maintenance and upgrades done at. Thanks!
Don at Hilltop Auto in Daly City also does really good work.
Don at Hilltop Auto should be your prime source to maintain and service your car.

***** (5 Star rating) This was a very yelpable experience!
I couldnt decide if I should keep this place a secret or advertise it, because I like the convenience of showing up and getting things done right away.
Do you ever get that sinking feeling at auto-service shops that you are about to get ripped off and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. Only to be reinforced later into a belief when you get the invoice. NOT HERE!
This place was fresh, owner Don, runs this gig, did a great job fixing my brakes in really short time, and above all gave me the best price so far in the city without asking/cajoling etc.
How do I know it was a good price - In general auto service costs in bay area are between 20-60% premium over southern california, so I did a quick price check with my brother, and I was on par with any good deal on brake replacement in southern California.
Guys come from Concord (yeah way east bay!) to get their car serviced here.
Only catch is that they specialize in Honda/Acura and most other Japanese car, and if you got an NSX this is the place to go.
There are tons of auto shops in the city with 100s of testimonials posted on their walls, and still they screw you with bills claiming they charge more because they do a good job. Well I got a great job at the great price so I had to yelp.
Its a special feeling to feel not getting fleeced at auto-service shops! Keep you feeling good for a long time.
enjoy.

New Clutch Master Cylinder Replacement $589.74?
Please give any advice or suggestions on what I should do to try and get it replaced at a decent price. As it seems the work is quite tedious and time consuming for a DIY job, but any suggestions are welcome.

Nice comments via email from LC in Fremont
Hi,
I just wanted to leave a testimonial for you guys - if you want to post it up on your website. I went out there about 2 months ago, for my intermediate service - not sure if you guys remember me, but I was the girl who drove all the way from Fremont to check out your place :)
"Great service - got there first thing in the morning to drop off my car for my intermediate service. This place came highly recommended so I drove 40 miles just to check it out. I got a prompt and friendly greeting, got my service written up, and was told my car would be worked on first thing since I was a waiter. Since it's pretty close to the BART, I decided to take a trip downtown while it was being serviced. Came back, everything was all good, and Don even took me for a test drive to see if we could pinpoint some noises I had been hearing. I had some minor damage to my car, and they had fixed that free of charge (a nice touch). Even though it was my first trip there, and I only had an intermediate service, I think I'll be back. As many others have mentioned, the prices are very reasonable and you can rest assure that your car is in good hands."

Just ordered Bilstien Shocks.. Installation?
So where do you guys take your cars to get them worked on? I was planning having the dealer isntall my bilstien shocks and then aligning the car, but I have a feeling that is going to cost a fortune.
Do any of you have a mechanic you trust that wont charge and arm and a leg to install stuff? After the whole 135 dollars for floormats fiasco at the dealer, I am a little bit afraid to go back =-).
I just did my eibach springs.
Has anyone taken a car to Don @ hilltop auto for an align? I'm thinking of going to him...
I had Don at Hilltop align my car ('91) a couple of years ago and it seemed fine; I've also had him do other work (timing belt, water pump, valve adjustment) over the last four years and I heartily recommend his shop for any kind of service/repair.

R12 freon to Freeze 12
I've read some old posts about some of you replaced R12 with Freeze 12 awhile ago. Just wondering if it caused any problems?
In the evacuation process of the R12, does it also remove the lubricant oil? Do you just add Freeze 12 after evacuating the R12?
Any issues mixing R12 and Freeze 12?
I've been following these A/C threads recently since it's so damn hot latley, and I've decided to just go with the r134 retrofit. Don at Hilltop Auto has a great price for the upgrade, and it seems to make the most sense.
I got the car back from Don yesterday and here's my seat-of-the-pants assessment of the r134 conversion:
"Why didn't I do this sooner?"
It runs cool and gets there quickly. And I sprayed some Ultrashield Air conditioning treatment in there for good measure.
And did I mention Don at Hilltop Auto? You can't get this kind of work done anywhere else in the Bay Area any cheaper/faster/better.
Ah...

Opinion Wanted on service price quote
Hello everyone,
I called one of the Acura dealer in Minnesota this afternoon and talked with a service manager about replacing my NSX's T-Belt, Water Pump, and other engine belts. I found out that including parts and labor, it is about $1800. Does this sound right to you guys? or Should I call the other Acura dealer to shop for price different?
I only drive my NSX in the Spring, Summer, and Fall seasons and when it is nice out. I only drive less than 5K throughout these seasons. I personally visualized the belts and they seem to look fairly new. Do you guys think I can put it off for a year or two?
Acura's recommended maintenance schedule says that you should replace your timing belt every 90K miles or 6 years, whichever comes first. Your timing belt should have been replaced in 2001. If it has never been replaced, it is now five years overdue. Two owners here recently reported timing belt failures on older NSXs which did not reach the mileage interval. If it fails, you will spend a whole lot more than it costs to replace it now. How bad will you feel if that happens?
Can you put it off a year or two? Well you can do whatever you want but, it HAS exceeded the recommended service interval already. I wouldn't put much stock in how it looks. If you like taking chances and can live with the BIG bill if it breaks, then wait, but I think you're on borrowed time as it is. I wouldn't take the chance.
Well, I for one wanted to be able to hit redline whenever I wanted without having to pray beforehand. Not very religious and god might have a nasty sense of humor about it and all that.
It set me back roughly xx$ for the TBelt and 60k mile service in CA. Don at hilltop did/oversaw the work. For me it just wasnt worth the hassle and I love the driving experience too much to compromise it by worrying about stuff snapping.

CTSC NSX vs Supra Turbo-I got smoked!
I was on my way home from work last night when I pull along side a gorgous black supra turbo. Im not sure exactly what mods were done but he said he had an AEM and some "minor" other goodies. Im not one for racing on the street but it was late at night and there were no other cars on the road. The lights turned green and we took off, I had him in 1 due to his exessive tire smoke and turbo lag and thru 2nd we were neck and neck, after shifting into third he started pulling away but once my VTEC engaged I starting gaining on him... towards the top of third he was about a half a car length ahead and in 4th I could not keep up (although I didnt really try-I didnt want to get a ticket or hurt someone) so I backed off. I was suprised the little Honda performed so well but now I have one small problem. I NEED MORE POWER!
I just bought the NSX a week ago and it's at Hilltop Auto getting a check up. I was planning on building stages and logging all of my development then going turbo, but if the head gasket is hurt, then it will be much sooner. I've already made a very unique intake system and want to finish one more version along with a 12-15lbs. exhaust system that I'm starting this week.

High Praise for Don at Hilltop Auto Service
I think Don is one of the most talented, honest and reputable mechanics. My history with Don began in spring of 2004. I had been taking my NSX to a local Acura dealer for service and infrequent repairs. In March I noticed small spots of liquid on my garage floor and took it in to get an estimate. They said the coolant reservoir was leaking slightly. In addition, they said they found a oil leak from the crank seal. The total estimate was approximately $4500 (my recollection). They said they would have to remove the engine to fix it. Well needless to say I was not a happy camper but pulled together the cash for the fix. However, before getting the service I did a little research by surfing the net, where I discovered Prime, and from Prime Don at Hilltop. I called him on a Saturday morning explained what the dealer told me. He thought that a crank seal leak was unlikely and said bring it in and we will look at it. When I arrived at his shop and he had both lifts being used. After looking over the car he removed a car in mid service and put mine up. After a few minutes he said you have one leaking Vtech gasket and a leaky oil pan gasket. He quoted something like $450 to fix the oilpan and replace both Vtech gaskets. Needless to say I was ecstatic. Since I had set aside the cash for the original repair, I bought a set of headers, exhaust, and coolant tank for SOS (also discovered on Prime). Don installed everything and fixed the leaks for $1154. Needless to say Don does and will continue to be my only NSX mechanic. I hihly recommend him to anyone. I live in the east bay and gladly commute to his Daily City shop.

Looking for a reputable shop in San Jose...
Hi All....I live in central San Jose and need a reliable and reputable shop to take my car in for a 15k service or at least change the oil. I just don't want to go to those quick oil change places and let those kids touch my car. I've just got the car last month. It's a 2004. xx Acura in Santa Clara wants $600. I think that's rediculous. Someone suggested xx in Santa Clara. I want to hear your experience there or any other places you would high recommend. Thanks a lot in advance.
Drive further and get it done at Don's Hilltop Auto Service. Simply the best in the bay area.
I also recommend Don at Hilltop for things that go beyond routine maintenance.

How many NSX'ers on this site live in the South Bay of SF Bay Area?
New member here.....got my dream car a month ago from another member on this site. I live in San Jose, CA and am wondering how many local guys own NSX in my area. Also, where do you guys take your car for service? Please let me know a good local reputable mechanic.
Most of the guys in the Bay Area take it to Don Lam of Hilltop in Daly City. He seems to have excellent service and great pricing.

Looking for SF East Bay mechanic
I finally bought a 97 NSX-T about 6 months ago and need to get some service done. I have ready a few posts about other NSX owners not using their local Acura dealer for service. I would appreciate any recommendations for places to take my car for oil changes, major service - clutch & timing belt, tires, etc. I live in the in Martinez and work in Walnut Creek.
Most people go to Don Lam over in Daily City. Hilltop Auto Service.
For major services like clutch and timing belt replacements, as well as diagnosing problems, it's worth driving a longer distance to someone who services a lot of NSXs, like Don. His website is here.
Don Lam is the man when it comes to NSX servicing. His rates are very reasonable and his service is top notch. I am sure you will find that many of us take our cars to him.
Don must really be the man, when even some guy from Chicago knows about him!
Go to Don.
you can't go wrong with Don. He's the best. I had my clutch, 4.23, snap ring fix and short gears done by him. Best service in the bay area!!!

Any reputable NSX mechanics in NorCal?
This is an awesome website and yall make it happen. I don't own an NSX yet but just wanted to see if any of you could recommend an expert nsx mechanic in the bay area as part of my information binder. ThanX.
Which part of the Bay Area? Don at Hilltop, in Daly City just south of the city, is probably the best known and most highly regarded.

Engine just stalls after a few.. which dealer should I go to xx or xx?
I Need some advice.. My NSX has got a sensor problem, and the Engine dies or becomes feably weak (runs below idle around 500 rpm before it dies) in real random times.
Anyway My question is: do you think I should bite the bullet and get it towed to xx Acura which is about 10 miles away from my home or just risk it and travel 2 miles to xx Acura?
There is only one tech in the Bay Area to take it to, Don Lam at Hilltop Auto.
For my last coolant hose replacement job, I went to Don Lam since xx has become fairly expensive. They restructured their rates recently and I simply didn't want to pay nearly twice as much for the same work. Don Lam did an excellent job and I plan to take my NSX back when I need more substantial work. It's quite a drive but worth it to me.
That's pretty high praise for Don's work for V to drive all the way to Daly City from Monterey.
Give Don a call.
I took it to xx Acura cause they were only a 1 mile away from where I live. The problem was fuel pump relay.
Since it was a simple fix I had them do it to save me some time.. Overall experience there was average. Nothing special. I did get a little worried though when they said "Wow.. we don't get a whole lot of NSX coming in here for problems.." I think I asked if they had a NSX specific tech and I think the guy looked at me funny.
Would I bring my car there again? maybe if I needed something very simple done.. Other than that probably not.
Aside from the dealers, I highly recommend Don's Hilltop Auto Service in Daly City.
I've always had a great experience with Don @ Hilltop and highly recommend him.

Bay Area Nsx Shop?
I live in santa cruz, and need a recomendation on nsx shops that do exclent quality services on nsx's. Im looking specifcly for a 90k major service which includes Timing Belt, Water Pump Replacments, Valve Adjustments, Hoses Replaced, Accesory belts replaces, All fluids replaces:coolant, radiator, transmission, brakes, etc. For a better quote than xx acura, xx is their quote. Any other places with better quality for a competive price? Much appreciation
You will find overwhelming praise for Don Lam at Hilltop Auto in Daly City. It may be a bit of a drive, but he's worth it.
Don lam seems like the one guy everyone is praising. i'll most likely call him when needed.

Timing Belt $$$
How much to do Timing Belt + Water Pump + V Adustment + Labor?
Since you are in SF, go to Don's Hilltop Auto in Daly City. He is in your backyard and he knows the NSX. I just had the timing belt and water pump package done with valve adjustment, coolant hoses replaced and a few other things and Don gave me a very competiive price. Every xx in the area charges more and so does xx in South Bay. Don does great work and charges less.
I live in Livermore and it takes me over an hour to get to Don's, but he is the only guy I go to for major services.
Call Don

Need a Mechanic in the San Jose/Palo Alto/Peninsula/East Bay Area
Can anyody make a recommendation of a good mechanic in the South Bay/Peninsula Area (San Jose/Palo Alto/Peninsula/East Bay) area. My Accord has 100K and I want to get it serviced.
I know a really good mechanic in Daly City. He is worth the trip from the Peninsula/South Bay. Place is called Hilltop Auto. You won't be disappointed.
yeah, Don is da man.

Recommended aftermarket parts installer
I have a set of Tein Flex coilovers and (soon) a CTSC that need to be installed. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good quality shop in the Bay Area?
Hilltop auto service in Daly City. 650-991-8838
Don at Hilltop Acura is only person I'd trust my NSX. He has come through numerous times. Always the lowest cost, always completes the work on time and always flawless work. I do not know why you would consider anyone else.
Don at hilltop uninstalled my blower and did a **great** job at a fair price - he's the nsx guy at the shop. my one-time interaction with him was great, btw, and xx likes his work so much he wants to have his children

Any shop rcommendation to install aftermarket exhaust in Bay Area?
I just ordered my exhaust....and wondering if there's a local shop that I can bring it to them to install it for me?
For installing something non-Acura-OEM like an aftermarket exhaust, I think Don at Hilltop Auto has more experience. For that reason, I had Don install my Tubi, and was very happy with the work. He is in Daly City.

Driver Side Window Dropped Today
Was in the parking lot and just started to switch the window down. Shot down like a rocket.
Read the threads on how to replace. Ordered the Dali Fix-it thingy tonight. Took the door panels off. Tried to see if the window regulator still worked, no sound or movement from it. I am guessing I will have to purchase a new one.
My question is, should I have a dealership put one in, quoted over $500.00 with out looking at it, attempt to do it myself, or have another business do it like Hilltop.
Sounds like the window regulator. Since it broke, I don't think you will be able to install the Dali things. Probably have to put in a new regulator and I would call Don's Hilltop Auto Service as they will probably be alot cheaper than the dealership. Unless you know how to work on cars a little, it might be a bit of a challenge even to take off the door panel. Good luck.

Who has a COMPTECH exhaust in SF BayArea?
I am about to order a Comptech exhaust but just want to make a final check to see if I can do what I plan to do with it and listen to it one more time. Anyone on here close to me? I live in SF and work in SSF.
My NSX is at Don's (Hilltop Auto Service), it will be there for at least a week. I don't know which one I have, I bought the CT exhaust from a member on this board about 4 or 5 months ago. I would venture to guess its an older one.

burnt oil smell, should i take to hilltop?
I've been noticing a burnt oil smell lately, and did a search on prime. it looks like the problem is either the cam plugs/ vc gasket/ or vtec spool valve. have any of you guys here in the bay area have experince in getting this job fixed by hilltop?? what should i expect for pricing? thanks
I would have no idea what is causing your burnt oil smell so a diagnosis and price estimate is impossible.
But if the NSX problem is in the Bay Area, the solution is always at Don's.

Bay Area Repair Shop Advise
Has anyone in the San Fran Bay Area used xx in Santa Clara for repair work on their NSX and if so what was your experience? I've scheduled a timing belt/water pump job.
I have used xx for a couple of jobs on my '91. They did my header/exhaust and my sway bars. But their prices just can't compare to Don at Hilltop Auto in Daly City.
I paid about < $xx for timing belt, all belt, water pump, and coolant at Hilltop. A lot of NSX owners in the bay area bring their cars to Hilltop. Their price is very reasonable and they do excellent job as well.
with the money you could have saved at Don's you could have bought a set of rear tires!

Your impressions of ACURA 3.2 TL...
We're looking at a 2000 3.2TL to replace my fiance's POS chevy. Just wondering what kinds of problems to look out for...I've heard of auto trans problems but wasnt sure what year that affected.
My wife has a 2000 TL with over 120k with no problems, even the auto trans has held up well. Regular and scheduled services are performed at Hilltop Auto, it's one of the best cars I've bought, besides the "X" and my Element.

SF Bay Area Certified Techs?
Hi All, looking for recommendations on a good SF Bay-Area Certified Technician who can do a pre-purchase inspection on a used NSX.
I'd have Don at Hilltop inspect it
There is only one NSX tech to go to: Don at Hilltop Auto in Daly City.
I agree with the comments to go to Don, but be advised he's going on vacation for a week and back on 7/12.
I'd have Don at Hilltop inspect it
Thanks all, the "Don's" have it!
Heh heh. One of my many "selling points" to the old lady is that Hilltop Auto is just down the street from where we live. Even if I were to drop off our "NSX" for an extended period of time, I could theoretically walk home and not have to worry about being stranded!

Price for timing belt and water pump job
I called several Acura dealers in my area and three of them quoted me $xx and the one in Sunnyvale quoted me $xx. Then I called Don Lam at Hilltop Auto Service at Daly City and he said $xx. In sum, Don has the lowest price.

2002 red 6k miles on ebay theft recovery
what do you guys think of a theft recovery that was stripped but rebuilt completely? 47k buy it now just want to see opinions on a theft recovered nsx , I found my car, but always keep an eye out.
I would insist on:
1. A thorough inspection of the mechanicals by an experienced NSX mechanic, with no significant problems noted. (If you need one, this particular car is located near Don's Hilltop.)
2. A thorough inspection of the body work by an experienced body repair specialist, with no significant problems noted.

Just curious if anyone has taken their NSX to Acura of Concord and what their experiences were.
Does it have to be a dealer? How about Don at Hilltop in Daly City? It's kinda sorta on the way in your hellish commute.

Tuning Shops In the Bay Area
are there any decent tuning shops that are catered to Nsx's?
If you are in need of installing a Comptech Supercharger or just need a good tuneup or mechanic, I would recommend Don Lam at Hilltop Auto Service in Daly City.
6-26-2005
high end muffler shop
I wouldn't take my NSX to a "muffler shop". Ever.
Just wondering, I'm getting my ARK exhaust installed tomorrow at a local muffler shop and after reading your comments, I feel I'm putting my car at risk. I value your opinion highly but I'm not sure where the risk here is? What should I be watching out for? I was told the ARK is a perfect fit. Or is the difficulty only lies with the Tubi?
It has nothing to do with the specific muffler. I would just trust an experienced NSX mechanic more than a muffler shop that works on any car that drives in the door. Chances are that someone with NSX experience has done aftermarket exhaust replacements, has dealt with the oxygen sensors, knows how to put the car on the damn lift , etc.
Since you're in South San Francisco, I'm surprised you're not just taking it to Don's Hilltop in Daly City...
Thanks for the tip, Nsxtasy. Called Don at 8:30am this morning and he got it installed by 10:00am. Took about only 20 minutes waiting time for me. It was great service! He even took the car for a spin to check on a few things. My car will certainly be back to get it in tiptop shape!

New Seattle NSX Owner - A question about Service Techs
I just bought my first NSX ('94 blk on blk) in SoCal and drove it back to Seattle. Had the master himself, Don Lam from Hilltop Auto in Daly City, put the timing belt and waterpump in, so the car's in tip top shape.

High Praise for Don at Hilltop Auto Service
Don's THE MAN
I might have to consider him on my next maintenance.
Don's the man
Don doesn't own an NSX. But my old NSX was almost considered his.
Remember folks, there is no one that is perfect and does everything right the first time, but Don is close. And by the remote chance something does go wrong, Don will make it right. The best thing I appreciate about Don is his HONESTY...
Ditto on that....Don is the only mechanic that works on my NSX. Hes done my Comptech intake/headers/exhaust, Exedy stage III clutch, slotted/cross drilled rotors, Eibach springs. I've been nothing short of impressed with the work hes done. Mind you I live about an hour from Don's shop, he's well worth the drive.
I do not have an NSX...But I can tell you guys that He is a great. He has been my mechanic since 1997. He does have a special affection for NSX. He is a really good guy and a good mechanic/engineer.
He knows NSX more than you and I can say... I asked his wife once the same question... He really wanted to own one, but he don't have time to enjoy it, since he is always busy fixing other people's NSX. High Praise for Don for his dedication!!! Yeah, thanks for the reminder, it's almost time for that oil change, I better call Don for an appointment.
I concur with all good things being said about Don, but the most important attribute is what Mike stated, that Don is honest, and to me that means everything. I have taken my "X" to Don exclusively and have always been impressed by the quality of the work, his care for the car (yes, I am picky), and I value his friendship.
I'm moving to HI and just had my car serviced and prepped for a long trip and unfortunately away from Don. I already talked to him about flying him out to work on my car, don't know if he's going to accept my offer.....

Timing belt, water pump done at 60K-when next?
When would you replace the timing belt, water pump (and cam seals) that were already done at 60K, again, on a NSX approaching 90K?
Seems to me there are (at least) two reasonable answers here, either replace them again at 120K, or at the 90K major service?
This is on a '93 very well maintained and regularly, but gently driven NSX.
I'd probably take it all the way from Stockton (80 miles) to Daly City and Don at Hilltop just because all the other work was done there, they seem to have a great reputation, and I'm a fanatic for good service and maintenance.
I usually have things done as often as they are recommended. And I try to use places that I trust.
Isn't xx Acura, in Sacramento, closer to you than Don's Hilltop (particularly when you take into account the need to drive through the city or around the bay to get to the latter)? Nothing against Don's, it's just a location thing; xx and Don's both have excellent reputations for NSX service.
A 80 mile drive is not far at all to drive for peace of mind. I myself go out of the way to make sure that someone I feel confident with is working on my car.

New member from bay area
hello all
picked up a 1996 black nsx two days ago. Love the styling...hate the engine noise.
Its with Don at hilltop auto getting a new timing belt/waterpump and valve adjustment/new plugs and filters
cant wait to see how she feels and sounds afterwards. Still getting used to the clutch.
4-22-2005, picked up the car from hilltop auto....
The car runs soooo much better. Smoother idle and much stronger feel. Better response and the ticking sound has gone down quite a bit. still ticking but don assures me its normal.
I have a lot of clutch noise but I wont be addressing that until I get a replacement. Don says it needs lubing but not to worry about it.
All in all Don has made me feel very good about my purchase. See you guys at the meets!!!

Engine just stalls after a few.. which dealer should I go?
Hey All
I Need some advice.. My NSX has got a sensor problem, and the Engine dies or becomes feably weak (runs below idle around 500 rpm before it dies) in real random times. I can go 100 miles(yesterday Sonoma county to Sunnyvale) or 200 yards( today) before it will stall again.
Anyway My question is: do you think I should bite the bullet and get it towed to xx Acura which is about 10 miles away from my home or just risk it and travel 2 miles to xx Acura?
There is only one tech in the Bay Area to take it to, Don Lam at Hilltop Auto.
For my last coolant hose replacement job, I went to Don Lam since xx Acura has become fairly expensive. Don Lam did an excellent job and I plan to take my NSX back when I need more substantial work. It's quite a drive but worth it to me. V

Good NSX shops in Cal Central Valley
Any suggestions for good NSX service and maintenance shops in the Cal Central Valley. I.E. Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto, California areas?
If not independant shops, Acura dealers with real NSX experience? Specific mechanics?
If no Central Valley suggestions, how about East Bay side of San Francisco Bay metro area?
I.E. Livermore/Pleasanton, Walnut Creek, Oakland? Thanks.
My question is, as I look at the service schedule, I"m not sure what I should do because the car is 10yrs old and only has 14K miles. It's running great but has a very slight hesitation in the early RPM area when I "get on it". Any suggestions? Should I take it in for an inspection, a tune up, a specific service? I've heard there's someone in Northern CA that does things cheaper than xx Acura. I'll poll the local club and ask.
From what I've read here on the forums, I'd probably take an NSX to that tech here in Stockton at the Acura dealership for the easy stuff, oil changes, etc-but drive the car into Don's Hilltop Auto Service in Daly City for the major services, particularly since that's where all the cars previous service was done, by the Bay area owner.
I'm real impressed with the work that's been done on this NSX I'm driving/selling, (car doesn't feel like it has 89K) and what I'm reading about Hilltop Auto Service.
As an airplane owner/pilot I know how important it is to find a good shop you can trust!

I just purchased a 1995 NSX that has 14K miles on it. It's like new and I love it!!

It depends on where you are in Northern California. In the San Francisco area, a lot of NSX folks take their cars to Don at Hilltop Auto Service, and near San Jose, others use xx.

Spend a lots on Timing Belt Service
I've just done with my timing belt and water pump service today. It cost me $xx for all of these. Does it really cost that much for this job ?
Something tells me you didn't take it to Don at Hilltop Auto Service; he's the best NSX mechanic in the area, and I bet he doesn't charge that much...

suspension: self-install or pay?
I had springs and shocks installed by Don (Hilltop) last year and I say its well worth the hastle and headache.
I'd get Don to do it, too -- because I want it done right. I know if I did it I'd screw it up somehow. So there's your answer: if you trust in your own mechanical aptitude, DIY. Otherwise, pay.

Best place to get comptech sc and installation--bay area ca?
2003 NSX, best place to purchase the kit, and have it installed?
I bought one for my 93 NSX and it will be installed by Don Lam at Hill Top Auto Service in Daly City. His website is Here.
I don't know if you've pulled the trigger on the SC yet, but Don at Hilltop Auto has experience in this install. Also, as mentioned above, xx is experienced as well. But you may find their prices a little high.

San Jose, Calif - PPI - I need Dealers/Shops
I probably would soon be a 1996 "NSX - Papa." Can anyone recommend a good shops/dealers/mechanics to provide a Pre-Purchase Inspection? San Jose California area. For this $$, I would not mind taking it to 2 shops for same service.
See this thread. I had Hilltop inspect the car I ended up buying.
I would recommend Don at Hilltop Auto in Daly City.
Hilltop is my first recommendation, (650) 991-8838).

Reliable mechanic in San Francisco
Hello, I have been having several problems with my 95 legend coupe ever since it was stollen. It has cost me over 2000 dollars so far in repairs, insurance covering very little. They say regular wear and tear, but I know that take car of my car and nothing was wrong before. Maybe they took my car out for an extreme joyride over the hill of San Francisco
So, without crying about it, I have been taking my car to the delarship and it costing me a lot. Does anyone know a great mechanic for our cars in San Francisco. I want good parts and work. A few things needed are: New CV joints, new radiator, new tranny mount, thermostat.
Go here: http://www.hilltopautoservice.com/ Don is really good and they only work on Acuras. Took my 95 Legend to get a timing belt water pump and all belts changed.
I second on Hill Top Auto Service. Don is straight forward and honest.

Any Acura Dealer Recommended (SF)?
Hello, I picked up my 04 NSX last July and now i'm getting near my first service 3k miles. I kinda want to stick with an Acura Dealer so i can keep a good service history on the car atleast for the 1st couple yrs.
Can anyone recomened a good Acura dealer here in SF, any good or bad experience?
How's XX or XX dealers?
If I lived in Daly City, I would be taking my car to Don's Hilltop for service. Best NSX mechanic in the SF Bay area. I would take it to the dealer for warranty work, of course, but I would take it to Don's for all scheduled maintenance, even from the start.
As Ken noted, Don's simply the most qualified in the area. He was the original NSX tech at Mike Harvey, which is where my car was purchased. Ken and I were both glad to see it in the "right" hands again!
I'm pretty sure both these dealerships have gotten bad reviews fairly recently.

Hi Don,
I guess I'm not alone in appreciating your service.
Subject: [nsx-list] Another Great Service Story
Date: Fri, 05 Nov 2004 18:41:07 -0500
I just wanted to share with you the great service that Don at Hill Top Auto Service (http://www.hilltopautoservice.com/).
I am in Northern CA and during my smog check at a local Chevron, the technician failed my NSX since the timing was advanced way over the 15 degrees (spec). I called Don immediately and he said it was ok to drive to his shop (without an appointment) and he would check my timing for me. What he found was that the timing gun that the Chevron tech used did actually give a false reading and wrote me a nice letter to show the proper procedures and timing gun used which I gave the Chevron tech.
The car passed on emissions and the Chevron tech finally used a different timing gun (after I showed him the letter) with some skepticism and it showed 15 degrees advanced so it passed. Don did all this and didn't charge me a penny for his services.
I continue to be very grateful to Don for his assistance. He sets an example for incredible service and I can always count on him to help with his knowledge on the NSX. All services on my car have been done by Don and I will continue to use him.
Date: Fri, 05 Nov 2004 20:25:17 -0500
Yep, Don is about as honest as they come.
Luckily, my NSX only lives 10 minutes from Don's shop.
Date: Sat, 06 Nov 2004 22:42:51 -0400
Yeah, yeah, I'll add my kudos too. He does a fantastic job. He's the only one (other than me) who's touched my car for eight years or so.
Date: Sat, 06 Nov 2004 03:12
I agree! Don does great job at Hill Top Auto.

Hi Don,
This went out to the NSX national list today, and I've already gotten some positive feedback (e.g., "Kudos to Don!"). Thanks.
Subject: [nsx-list] Good Service Story
We hear stories about bad service or broken promises, so I thought I'd share a good story. I had some routine maintenance done at Hill Top Auto Service in Daly City, California recently. I picked up the car and drove home, and when I parked in my garage I smelled a bit of oil. At the same time, the phone in the house was ringing. It was Don Lam, owner of Hill Top. He said he had noticed a few drops of oil where my car had been idling in his lot before I left, and he was very worried that perhaps his assistant had pinched a gasket when putting the valve cover back on after Don did the valve adjustment. He said he had tried my cell phone, but I had had it off. I looked under the car, and sure enough, there was a small drip. Don apologized profusely, asked me to check the oil level, add oil as necessary, and bring the car back in as soon as possible. He even wanted me to put newspaper under the car to avoid staining the garage fl oor (I told him not to worry, the floor is painted).
The next week I took the car back, and Don found that the valve cover had a very small chip taken out of it in one corner. He found this by replacing the gasket, doing an idle check with no problems, and then checking after a road test. Then you could see that the pressure had caused the gasket to bulge out of the chipped corner area; there was a small leak there. Again, he apologized, and he had no idea how the chip had occurred, but there was never any question that he was going to take full responsibility and make it right. Delivery of a new valve cover from Honda is very uncertain. Don found one at CompTech and got it delivered and installed in a couple of days. I just picked up the car, it runs great, and Don apologized for the inconvenience once more.
Character comes out under stress.

Issues with '92 NSX Manual Transmission
Some dealers aren't all that keen about opening up transmissions to work on them. So you might want to take it somewhere that has a lot of NSX experience. I'm not sure who's good in the East Bay where you are, but you're not all that far away from some great NSX service folks - Don at Hilltop in Daly City.
If it's anything like the Civic Tranny, and it can't be too different - it's just a laterally mounted 5 speed, then it's an easy DIY to replace a case half if you're willing to get dirty. Check the shim spacing per the Helm and you should be fine.
If you ever hear a mechanic talking like that, keep in mind that he's telling you how much he DOESN'T know about your car. Run away!
No, not magic; not magic at all. However... In any complex procedure, there are various factors that will make it easy and successful, or, in their absence, difficult or problematic. These include having the right tools (not just hand tools, but, depending on the job, items such as a lift, electronic diagnostic equipment, alignment and measuring rack, etc); having general mechanical/automotive knowledge, having experience at the task at hand, etc. The experience factor tells you where you can take short cuts, and where things can go wrong; knowing these will make the job go quicker, and prevent you from having to do it over again.
Sure, anyone can learn how to service an NSX transmission. But consider this: The experienced NSX mechanics, the ones who have replaced clutches and gears and cases numerous times before, know all the tricks and have all the tools, and still take 8-12 hours to open up the transmission, service it, and put it back together. How long do you think it might take the first time you do it? What is likely to go wrong? And what tools don't you already have for the job? Oh wait, you've never done this before, so you don't know the answers to those questions, either...
Does anyone know if there are any Acura dealers in the area still willing to give some goodwill for this kind of job??
If I lived in the East Bay, I would take it to Don at Hilltop Auto.

My NSX has been serviced virtually entirely by Don of Hilltop Auto in Daly City (a couple of oil changes by xx before we found Don.)
9-10-2004
I am not sure exactly what he did. It might be best to call him or just bring the car to him.
I felt that I couldn't really get a good at the bottom of the car without lifting it up. In the end, there was no way I would have discovered the noise using my own conventional methods anyway; I am glad Don was able to resolve it. Given the fact he probably works on hundreds of NSX's a year, he has a good foundation for troubleshooting obscure issues like this.
Can you tell me exactly what was wrong and how it was fixed, or should I just take it to Don.
Front end creak
Thanks everyone for responding!
I ended up taking the car back to Don. After a fairly extensive effort, Don figured out what was wrong. Everything is quiet up front now. Thanks Don for the hardwork on this!

CTSC installer needed!
In the SF bay area and am looking for a shop that will install my brand new CTSC for my 2000 NSX-T! I was going to initially get the 9psi, but comptech said that Acura won't warranty it. That being said, do i have to get Acura to install the CTSC if the car is still under warranty? If not, i prefer to get it done with someone who really know their stuff!!
To get back to your original question, Don at Hilltop Auto in Daly City is also experienced in the CTSC install, and he is much more reasonably priced. Check the Northwest Region Forums on this site to read some of the praises of Don. Many SF Bay Area owners prefer his work to other shops. I know I do!

Getting to hilltop
Getting to hilltop from the southbay is a bit easier now since the BART has been extended to Millbrae.
If you hop on a CalTrain, there's a transfer point point between CalTrain and BART at Millbrae.
Don's shop is about 3 blocks from the Daily City BART station. There are a couple of CalTrain stations in Sunnyvale.

shop in the bay area
Just bought a 94 nsx and need to do the header and exhaust. Can anybody recommend a good shop? I live in sunnyvale.
go to Hilltop Auto Service in Daly City!
While I've heard great reports about Hilltop Auto Service in Daly City, I've also heard great reports about xx.
I'm sure you've already done a search, but IMO Don at Hilltop is your best bet for this work. He will save you lots of $ for the same product that you will get from xx for just 30 min. more of travel time.
I've been to both. I go back to Don.

Don just did more work on my car (picked it up yesterday). I have been going for 3+ years now. He's done all of the major work on my car since 68K miles (my car is now at 116). If you search prime, you'll find many other endorsements for Don.
Thanks for the info, i think i'll get some suspension mods to and have him do it all at once.

Stolen NSX in Bay Area ...
I just saw this car in Hilltop today. It was sitting there to wait for an inspection after it was stolen. Damn!!! It is one of the most perfect Black NSX I have ever seen. The paint and interior are so perfect.....and it is a 91...I can't believe it...

Need NSX inspected in the Bay area
I need a thorough inspection done on an NSX I am considering purchasing. Can anyone recommend a good Acura dealership and/or mechanic in the San Francisco Bay area that will perform a complete and reliable inspection? Also, how much can I expect to pay for the inspection? Thanks very much.
Don Lam at Hilltop Auto in Daly City has extensive NSX experience and a good reputation. I had him do a pre-purchase inspection about a year ago.
he's at www.hilltopautoservice.com

Keep in mind that only some places have independent mechanics with a lot of NSX experience, like xx near Boston (as well as places like xx in Phoenix, Don's Hilltop near San Francisco). These folks are often significantly less than dealer service in their area. However, if you live in an area that does not have an independent with this experience, your options may be to use an inexpensive independent who is not all that familiar with the NSX, or an expensive dealer with NSX experience. I wouldn't hesitate to use the former for minor repairs like brakes and tires... but for the extensive work you are talking about, I would insist on taking it somewhere where they do a lot of work on NSXs.

Hey guys I just bought my first 94 NSX but it needs a new clutch, I need to find a good NSX mechanic in the eastbay near Antioch/Oakley/Pittsburg/Concord area.
Thanks
If you want to come to this side of the bay, I would recommend Hilltop Auto Service in Daly City. Those are the best NSX service station in the area I know off.
I've also had service done by Don at Hilltop Auto in Daily City.
Drive to Daly City. I do. You can walk to the BART station and take the train back to the East Bay. If you plan to wait while the work is done, bring a jacket. It gets foggy and cold there.
Don at Hilltop is always my first choice. Good tip about bringing a jacket though!
Hey, wait a minute ................. we are becoming very territorial all of a sudden aren't we ..............
This newbie lives in our backyard nor yours! Given his geographic location, it's a no brainer:
If you are an NSXCA member, drive to xx Acura in Sacramento.
Drive and save a $
Don will be cheaper, and does top notch work. Even if he gets the NSXCA discount at xx.
Thanks guys for all your help. I think I will try Don at Hilltop as soon as I get my clutch parts, I have family in daly city so I can just hangout there until its done although I hear its a 10hr job???
5-17-2004
Don is a very good man. He's not after money. He doesn't tell me what I don't need to do. I trust him & that's why I take my car here. Don't work too hard. Take care of yourself! Don.

HoHo, HoHo, I love your prices & quality work. That's why you keep me coming back!

Mechanic in Bay Area
Hey All,
I looking for a good Mechanic to do some basic matinance:
Oil Change
Spark Plugs
Radiator Flush
etc....
I'm hoping that the Mechanic or Shop is available late in the evenings or on Sundays, able to purchase Acura stock parts and do work at a fair price. Thanks
Don at Hilltop Auto comes highly recommended. As far as open late nights and Sundays, I doubt you'll find anything period.

I'd second that recommendation of Don @ Hilltop as well but its better to make an appointment first.

incredible service and I can always count on you to help with your knowledge

My last service was with xx Acura, I don't think I will ever go back to them again. Next time I will give Hilltop a try, I've heard so many good stories about Hilltop, I've called Don Lam a few times regarding servicing my car, and he seems to be a very nice guy. I asked him so many questions and he never seem to get upset, even if I never service my car there. I think he really loves his job as a professional mechanic. I will post info regards to Hilltop in the near future. Hope this helps!
3-26-2004
I have had good service from of course Don at Hilltop.
3-26-2004

Hello, I am a new NSX owner. I am wondering if anyone on this site can suggest a shop for maintenance/ repair in the San Ramon CA area.
I don't know of any shops in the San Ramon area, but you might want to check out this thread for some NoCal recommendations. They're a bit of a drive from San Ramon.
Thanks for the reply. I am going to take it to Don at Hilltop Auto.
I have had some bad experiences taking my cars to non-specialized service shops, so I'm glad I found a shop that really knows these cars.

if you're looking for a great NSX tech in your area, I would suggest checking out Don's Hilltop in Daly City. I know it means going across the bay and through the city, but it's still a lot closer than Santa Clara...
I agree....he's another well known tech that does impeccable work with NSXs.....

Advice please for my first purchase!
I am actively looking to purchase my first NSX. I live in Northern California (Bay Area) and am reluctant to purchase a vehicle without prior inspection.
Don's Hilltop is also very highly regarded for NSX service.
If you're already in the Daly City area, the place you want to go is Don's Hilltop auto service. The guy is a Wizard of NSXen.

Weird engine noise
My car has weird engine noise....
I had similar issues with my car when I bought mine used. When it came time to do my timing belt, I had the valves adjusted too by Don at Hilltop here in the Bay Area. The engine has since been smooth and sonorous - even after 30K+ miles.
Can you give me a lead to Hilltop and your mechanic? Thanks.
Contact information for Don's Hilltop Service is on his website, here. He is just south of San Francisco.
He (the Hilltop guy Don) seems to come highly regarded for any folks in silicon valley.
10-5-2003
You need a second opinion! Out here we have Don at Hilltop Auto. In AZ they have Mark. I say get it to someone local that NSX people trust.

I recall paying a lot less getting that done at Hilltop Auto...
7-27-2003
There are only two people in the Bay Area I let work on my NSX -- Don at Hilltop and (). There may be other good techs around here, but with these two guys on my team, I sleep well at nights.
7-23-2003
Why not taking it to Don who is right next to the Bart station?
7-19-2003
It's time for my 45k service I want to ask for a shop recommendation.
Then again, there is always Don Lam @ Hilltop.
Actually, I already decided to go with Hilltop. In fact, I was just there on Thursday. All is well with the car and I was happy with the service. The car purrs like my cats and feels extra smooth. I will need to go back however as I'm in need of some new stoppers. It is a little far, but worth the drive, especially when other Xs are in shop.
7-12-2003
Don did a good job and replaced my OEM shocks with bilsteins on the lower perch.
6-29-2003
I'm getting bilstein shocks for my '93 nsx... where do you guys recommend that I get them installed?
Should I go to an aftermarket specialist or can i go to someone like Don at Hilltop Acura?
I will go to Don at Hilltop.
I too would go to someone who is familiar with servicing NSXs, either an independent or a dealer. If I were in the SF Bay area, I would take it to Don's.
Thanks for the replies guys... that's good to know Don is recommended.
6-12-2003
Anyone in the SF Bay Area can recommend a good place to replace my clutch when the need arises in the near future? I want to deal with a shop that has a good reputation and experience.
Don Lam at Hilltop is the man. Call him at 650 991 8838. He rebuilt my transmission and replaced the clutch and practically did all the works on all my cars.

I’m from the bay and have heard that Don Lam is an excellent NSX mechanic. I was wondering if anyone had his number or any way I could get in contact with him. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Service recommendation
Anyone in the SF Bay Area have a GREAT, TRUSTWORTHY recommendation for a local service guy? I need timing belt, water pump, etc. etc. I've heard of Don at Hilltop Auto Service, and I've done a few minimal things with Stevens Creek Acura. But this is big stuff and I need someone who is knowledgeable, won't damage the car, and most of all, trustworthy. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
I think you first comment about Don is correct, I have heard nothing but good things about him.
Ask Don at Hilltop Auto Service, his rate is reasonable.
Have you had service done at Hilltop? Was it done right the first time? Did Don make sure he looked out for things you might not have come in for? Did he treat the car carefully? Any specific feedback would be great. Thanks again.
Do a search on sevice in this area and almost everyone will recommend Don. Want big-ticket items? How about short gears and R&P? Timing belt and valves? Headers and exhaust? Engine remove and replace? He'll do it all, and he'll do it on time. And probably cheaper than anyone else in the Bay Area.
Did oil change & exhaust system replacement at his place.
Yes he put extra attention on NSX.
Especially if the car is as mint & clean as mine on the engine and the bottom of the car.
Don is factory trained too. He is trustworthy and he will treat you like a friend. I have nothing but good things to say about him. He does all the work except routine oil changes on my 2 NSXs, and CRV.
Another plug for Don
Go to Don. He rocks.
Thanks everyone! I have an appointment at Hilltop. From what I was quoted, you sure can't beat Don's prices.

Don at Hilltop did a great job installing my Tubi.

Anyone had their timing belt failed before 90K
Uh oh! I think someone is going to show you the link pretty soon.
If you're looking for a mechanic in your area with a lot of NSX experience, I recommend Don's Hilltop.
My $.02 worth-
When I had Don At Hilltop Auto do some maintenance on my '91 (with 25K) about 3 months ago, I asked him about the timing belt and would have had him change it if he recommended it. He said that he had never seen one fail due to time, only mileage, and that he didn't think I needed to change it. You have to put some weight on his opinion, especially when he is essentially turning away paying work.
That said, I am still seriously thinking about having him do it just to be on the safe side.
Hill Top disclaimer: Manufacturer recommends changing it at 90,000 or 72 months whichever comes first. It’s the customer’s choice.

There are no non-dealer experienced NSX mechanics in St. Louis. That's no surprise; I'm pretty sure there are only around half a dozen nationwide (including Don's Hilltop in CA, who is sort of dealer affiliated; since they seem to know a lot about the NSX).

I use Don at Hilltop Auto here in the Bay Area. I think his service charges are quite reasonable compared to the Acura dealerships in the area and he knows what he is doing. Thus, I don't think my maintenance costs so far are unreasonable.

You may want to take it over to Hilltop Auto and have them install the new pulley. Give Don a call: www.HilltopAutoService.com) I highly recommend them.

Which Acura Dealer should I take an NSX to for pre-purchase inspections?
I know that Don at Hilltop is not in the South Bay, but he is always my first choice.

I just came back from Don's Hilltop Auto and saw new supercharger.
It was nice to see every one out at Hilltop and a treat to see the BBSC installed on a couple of NSX's.

I’ve been to Don's for service. Don is a great guy.
I've heard great things about Don as well.

Dear Don
This is a report card to let you know how the 87 Black Acura Legend 4dr is doing.
I have been monitoring the coolant level. The results are:
1. Coolant loss after sitting overnight - good
2. Engine is running cooler - good
3. Fan is coming on sooner so temperature does not rise as much - also good.
Final Grade - "A"
Don is the Best! Thanks!

Hi All,
I know this topic keeps coming up...
If you live in the SF bay area, which shops do you trust with doing repair (engine) work?
If someone suggests Don at the Hilltop auto thing again, please provide a phone number and address.
Thanks in advance.
Don's phone number is (650) 991-8838. Use him, he's great.

I've seen the recommendations for Hilltop in Daly City. Does anyone know of a good shop in the East Bay who can do some suspension work?

Tried LGA and wasn't happy. All of my future service will be at Hill Top Auto where the owner, Don, is the guy who knows and appreciates the NSX.

Can someone recommend a service center for my 96 NSX-T in the San Francisco, Bay Area? I have heard about a place called "Hill Top" in Daly City. Has anyone ever dealt with him? Please let me know.
Don at Hilltop in Daly City has an excellent reputation w/many NSX-NW club members.
Yes, many have more experiences than I, but Don is highly recommended.
I have used Hill Top for everything car related, NSX, Bimmer, Porsche, hahaha.
Don is highly recommended.
Me too. I use Don for all my cars. Very, very good.
I have used both Hilltop and the other. The work is excellent. Don at Hilltop, however, is the most reasonable price-wise. Don has done my short gears and R&P as well as my timing belt and 90K service. He'll continue to get my business.

Acura dealer in the SF Bay Area
Anyone knows any good shop names (Acura dealer?) to change the timing belt and 90K service for my NSX in the Bay Area? Also, my NSX is not running due to the sudden clutch failure. I planned to tow the car to the best shop around and let them take care the whole thing. Also, anyone knows how much cost I will be looking at? Any information will be helpful. Thanks.
Don at Hilltop Auto Service in Daly City is great. He did my short gears and R&P as well as my timing belt and 90K service.
He's very neat ane, get this, reasonably priced too! (650) 991-8838
Don specializes in Honda/Acura. However, his NSX experience is unequal in the area.
I agree, he is neat and the prices are great!!

Don is my favorite guy! I wouldn't take my car anywhere else.
I bought this brand new Acura because of Don. Don is so good at fixing them!
Don is a busy man. I don't mind waiting or bringing my car back some other time if you are too busy to work on it today.
I came all the way from East Bay even after I moved because Don is so good. I have not seen a Mechanic with that much experience & that good.
All of my family & friends' cars come to you for service.
We love Don. He's just such a sweetheart!
My friend wants to move back to SF because of Don. She can't find an honest & good Mechanic after she moved
I am moving to LA but I will still bring my car to you by arranging a visit to SF.
I am shipping this car to out of state but I want you to check it & change/fix whatever you see because I know I won't be able to find a good Mechanic like you.
Go ahead & fix whatever Don thinks it needs. I trust Don!
The guy has a lot of blessings & was gifted in what he does! Many people can be a Technican but not many can be as good as DON!
We have customers coming from all over the Bay Area & other states as well. To name a few: Some come from Sacramento, Antioch, Concord, San Jose, Pleasanton, Stockton, Fremont, Far away from the East Bay & across the Golden Gate Bridge areas. Some drive from LA, Las Vegas, & Reno. Some have their cars completely serviced & ship them to Hawaii, Washington, & Oregon. Quite a few bought their cars from LA, drove to us, flew home to other states, have us get all the works done, then flew back to SF & picked up their cars, then they either drive home or ship it home.
